James Kvaal, Senior Fellow

James Kvaal is a Senior Fellow at American Progress. In his work with the Center for American Progress Action Fund's Hyde Park Project, he analyzes contemporary issues in economic, health care, and energy policy.

Kvaal served as policy director on John Edwards' 2008 presidential campaign, where he coordinated the development of the first universal health care plan proposed by a presidential candidate in nearly two decades, as well as ambitious policies in the areas of poverty, global warming, tax reform, and education.

Earlier in his career, Kvaal was a senior policy advisor at the White House National Economic Council, where he concentrated on higher education and budget issues. He has also worked on higher education and student aid policy for the Committee on Education and Labor of the U.S. House of Representatives and in the office of the deputy secretary at the U.S. Department of Education.

His writings on taxes, health care, and other areas of domestic policy have appeared in The New Republic, The American Prospect, Politico, Tax Notes, and other publications. His work is regularly cited by major newspapers and media outlets and he has been a guest on a variety of television and radio programs. He holds degrees earned with honors from Stanford University and Harvard Law School.
