Senator Durbin on Mortgage Plans Falling Short
August 3, 2009, 12:00pm – 2:00pmMost economists and policymakers agree that we can't solve America's economic crisis until we end the increasing foreclosure crisis, where the economic meltdown began. Please join us for a keynote speech by Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-IL) on what Congress can do to prevent millions of home foreclosures and the shockwaves of damage those foreclosures would cause. Senator Durbin's remarks will be followed by a lively panel discussion on the next steps that should be taken to address the foreclosure crisis, in advance of the first detailed report of servicer activities under the Home Affordable Modification Program.
Perspectives on the Future of the American Labor Movement
August 31, 2009, 10:00am – 11:00amSince bursting on to the national stage in the 1980s as the young, reform-minded leader of the United Mine Workers, Richard Trumka has earned a reputation as one of America's most aggressive and charismatic labor leaders. His fiery 2008 speech to the United Steelworkers, seen by more than 500,000 YouTube viewers, is credited with galvanizing support for Barack Obama among white union families. Now, after having served as the AFL-CIO's secretary-treasurer since 1995, Trumka is in line to be elected president of the 11 million-member labor federation at its Pittsburgh convention next month. Trumka is coming to the Center for American Progress Action Fund to share his vision for the future of the trade union movement and to candidly discuss the challenges and choices facing organized labor today.
Following Mr. Trumka's address, the director of the American Worker Project, David Madland, will facilitate a discussion between the secretary-treasurer and the audience.
