The Center for American Progress Action Fund and its partners are dedicated to advancing health coverage issues by working with Health Champions and health advocates to bring public focus, media attention and policy community engagement to this issue through 2006 and beyond.
Health care costs are skyrocketing while American families continue to lose health coverage. Family incomes can’t keep up with the rising burden of health care costs — health care premiums have increased five times faster than wages, and rising health care costs have left 46 million Americans without health insurance. American businesses are struggling to compete in the global marketplace as they shoulder the burden of our ailing health care system, while the White House and Congress have failed to address the nation’s health care crisis. In short, the American health care system is broken, and we must make real changes.
While the public knows that our health system is broken, today’s policymakers have failed to convert this concern into action. We need a new generation of leaders who will make providing affordable health coverage for all Americans a signature issue.
These leaders — Health Champions who are committed to fixing our national health care crisis and publicly emphasizing the importance of this issue — will reinvigorate the national dialogue on health care issues. By emphasizing health care coverage, Health Champions will ignite the demand for large-scale change and embolden other policymakers to take up this issue.
The Center for American Progress Action Fund and its partners are dedicated to advancing health coverage issues by working with Health Champions and health advocates to bring public focus, media attention and policy community engagement to this issue through 2006 and beyond. We seek to spark a national demand for change by creating grassroots support for coverage issues and the policymakers who champion health coverage. Our efforts include staging activities and events designed to highlight the public’s demand for change, and providing data, policy support and messaging advice to Health Champions, advocacy organizations, faith communities and other stakeholders.
We look towards the moment when our nation’s leaders are collectively dedicated to:
- Providing affordable coverage for all Americans;
- Controlling health care costs;
- Guaranteeing choice of doctors and health plans; and
- Making prevention a national priority.
